Rationalism and Relativism: An Essay on John Rawls and Michael Oakeshott

This essay creates an unlikely conversation between two 20th century thinkers: John Rawls and Michael Oakeshott. I say “unlikely” because apart from a few scant remarks in the writing of each did not directly engage other. The begins by examining Oakeshott’s explication “The Rationalist” her tradition history political thought. Specifically, shows that rationalism politics involves belief reason is infallible guide to activity Rationalist seeks certainty perfection affairs. goes on tease out rationalistic tendencies Rawls’ A Theory Justice, then it analyzes critique applies these criticisms Rawls. Briefly, Oakeshott marks distinction technical practical knowledge, he argues principles make up manuals like Justice are abridgments no substitute for understanding we gain through our experience participation given tradition. While explaining Rawls, indicates some relativistic proclivities appeal practices traditions, entertains objections Rawlsian might offer.
